A tragic power surge caused by faulty high-voltage lines has claimed four lives and injured eight others in the Sabuwar Unguwa community of Katsina State.
The incident occurred Friday evening after two high-tension lines reportedly clashed during a windstorm, resulting in abnormal electricity flow to homes in the area.
Victims were electrocuted while interacting with household appliances, particularly refrigerators. Three people — two women and a man — died instantly, while a fourth victim later succumbed at the hospital.
One of the deceased, a mother of three, was electrocuted while attempting to switch off the family fridge, according to her husband, Sani Ibrahim.
Eight others, mainly women, suffered burns to their hands and backs and are currently receiving treatment, with three hospitalized at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina.
The surge also damaged over 55 refrigerators and other household appliances, sparking concern over infrastructure safety and the response of utility companies.
Officials from the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) have yet to provide a formal statement, with local staff referring inquiries to their Kano head office.
The victims have been buried according to Islamic rites.
