A Non=Governmental organisation, Gbonse Foundation for Economic Development, has empowered no fewer than 60 women with free medical services as part of efforts to promote health and improve the well-being of underserved populations.
The outreach is in commemoration of the International Women’s Day (IWD) in Igando community.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Helen Olaniyan, the initiative is designed to provide essential health services to residents who may have limited access to regular medical care, noting that the programme is scheduled for free blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing, health education sessions, and referrals for further medical care where necessary.
Olaniyan, who was represented by a staff, Susan Aigbe, stressed that the outreach is particularly meaningful as it takes place around the time when the world celebrates IWD, a day set aside to recognise the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women to families, communities, and the society at large.
“The Foundation forms broader mission to improve the economic and social well-being of Nigerians. While focusing on supporting underserved communities through financial empowerment, health promotion, and social welfare initiatives aimed at improving overall quality of life.
“Our goal is to empower citizens, especially those at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid and contribute to building a society free from poverty and economic disparity,” the CEO said.
A medical practitioner at the Lagos State Primary healthcare, Bamidele Oni, explained the importance of regular checkup and preventive measures, saying, “We are hereditary to some diseases. They run in our family. So, if we don’t check ourselves often, we might not know which one we are having.”
Oni further stressed that the medical outreach had helped many beneficiaries to know their health status.
Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries, Funmi Okanlanwon, a trader at Odo-Eran, said the programme is helpful, such as checking blood pressure, weight and sugar level.
Also, Mrs Nkechi Akudinobi described the programme as a supportive scheme both medically and financially.
