Group urges dialogue to end Rumuekpe oil firm-community crisis

The Foundation for Patriotic Citizens and Sustainable Development (FPCSD) has appealed for peace amid the lingering dispute between the Renaissance African Energy Company (formerly Shell) and Rumuekpe community in Emohua Local Council of Rivers State.

The group warned that the prolonged conflict has fostered instability, hindered development, and disrupted oil operations with consequences for the national economy.

In a statement, FPCSD urged the energy company to embrace open dialogue and constructive engagement with the host community to restore trust and create an atmosphere conducive to full operations and sustainable development.

Executive Director of the foundation, Pat Obiene, noted that years of unresolved grievances between Rumuekpe and Shell had left deep economic gaps. He said the community requires honest dialogue rather than further conflict, which has rendered the area underdeveloped.

Obiene disclosed that the foundation had secured a mandate from the community to act as an impartial facilitator, bringing the company and community leaders to the table to work out sustainable solutions.

He stressed that constructive dialogue would not only restore peace but also affirm the company’s commitment to responsible corporate citizenship.

“This can turn Rumuekpe into a model of peace and sustainable growth for other oil and gas producing communities in Nigeria,” the group said.
