Gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, at the weekend shot dead a commercial motorcyclist, popularly known as okada rider, on Civil Defence Road, Ahoada Town, in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen, numbering three, stopped the okada rider, who was simply identified as Innocent, under the pretense of boarding the okada to a destination.
However, when the rider realised their true intentions, he resisted, which unfortunately led to him being shot. The gunmen then fled with his motorcycle.
It was learned that the victim was rushed to an undisclosed hospital by his family members, but he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
The incident has been reported to the Ahoada Police Division in Ahoada Main Town.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, a Superintendent of Police, Grace Iringe-Koko, promised to provide an update on the matter but had not done so as of press time.
