The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of a Federal Ministry of Aviation staff member, Elvis Simon Okerenyi, on charges of forgery and defrauding a job-seeker.
Investigations revealed that Okerenyi defrauded Titus Tavershima of N1 million under the guise of securing employment for him in the Federal Civil Service. The offence contravenes Section 320 and is punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code, Cap 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria, 2006.
Following a plea bargain agreement with the prosecution, the initial seven-count charge against Okerenyi was amended to a single count, to which he pleaded guilty.
Upon arraignment before Justice S. C. Oriji in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Okerenyi was convicted under Section 270(10) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act based on his guilty plea.
The court sentenced him to one year imprisonment with an option of a N200,000 fine. Additionally, he was ordered to pay N350,000 as restitution to his victim.
