The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced its operation ‘guduma’ (hammer) against fake, faded, covered and unapproved diplomatic number plates, saying that criminal offences are mostly committed using mobility.
The Corps said that it is working on the order of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to ensure that every vehicle in the country is identifiable with a number plate linked to the details of the owner.
While speaking in Bauchi, a senior officer of the Corps, Corps Commander Chorrie Muta’a, who was sent to Bauchi to lead the operation, said that the Corps would no longer tolerate using fake, old, faded, inappropriate and covered number plates.
According to him, “There are those who are government officials, that have access to government number plates, they use them on their private vehicles and when they commit crime, you find it difficult to punish them. Some of them even cover their numbers, when they knock someone down, they are tempted to run away because their glass is tinted and their identity (number) is covered.
“When you give birth to a child, you name the child, you won’t allow him roaming the streets without a name. The number plate is the identity of a vehicle. We have noticed this among many Nigerians: driving a vehicle without a number, this is tantamount to a child with no name,” he said.
Chorrie said that the Corps had done similar assignments in other parts of the country and would ensure that “every part of Bauchi” is combed. “We are going to every local government area of Bauchi State.”
He urged car owners to cooperate with the personnel of the Corps to ensure a safer country for all. He added that the exercise which commenced on Monday would run till Friday.
