Insecurity: Kogi begins registration of keke, okada riders
Kogi State government on Sunday said that it has commenced the identification registration for members of the Motorcycle Operators and Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (MOTOAN).
The state commissioner of transportation, Atuluku Victor Levi, stated this while addressing newsmen in Lokoja on Sunday.
Levi told journalists that the overriding importance of the exercise is to get an accurate number of members of the unions and possibly checkmate infiltration by criminal elements.
The commissioner explained that the data capturing will enable the government to provide welfare packages and develop a comprehensive information database for registered members of the organisations.
Levi, therefore, advised all union members to come forth for the registration exercise, saying that only registered members of the MOTOAN would be recognised by the government, going forward.
According to the commissioner, it is only the recognised union officials who are authorised, while others not known by the government will be penalised in accordance with the law.
Levi further stated that successful members will be provided with identification cards with immediate effect, warning that it is a punishable offence to operate in the state without an identification tag.
