JED denies allegation of charging above approved electricity tariffs

Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED)

Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) Plc has dismissed allegations circulating on social media that it charges electricity tariffs different from those approved for Distribution Companies in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

The Company was reacting to a viral video clip claiming that electricity consumers under JED pay N1,000 to get only 4.5 units at the cost of N250. It was said that consumers under the IBEDC pay for 1 unit at N10.95.

The company, in a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Saratu Aliyu Dauda on Friday, described the claims as false, misleading, and inconsistent with the regulatory framework guiding electricity tariff administration in Nigeria.

According to the statement, electricity tariffs are strictly regulated and approved by the appropriate authorities, adding that JED Plc only implements tariffs officially approved by the regulator.

“Any deviation from these approved tariffs would constitute a regulatory breach and attract appropriate sanctions,” the statement said.

JED Plc stressed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and compliance with all regulatory directives governing electricity service delivery within its franchise area.

The company further explained that its billing and tariff structures are implemented strictly in line with the approved tariff schedule applicable to its operational coverage areas.

It urged customers and the general public to disregard the viral claims and rely only on information disseminated through its official communication channels and regulatory publications.

The electricity distribution company also encouraged customers with complaints or inquiries relating to tariffs, billing, or other service-related matters to contact its customer care channels or visit the nearest JED Plc Customer Care Centre for clarification and prompt resolution.

The statement reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering quality service while maintaining integrity, transparency, and regulatory compliance.
