Kano adopts climate change policy to combat environmental challenges

Concerned by the devastating impact of climate change, the Kano State Executive Council has approved a comprehensive policy framework to address environmental degradation.
The policy, when operational, is expected to mitigate greenhouse emissions, deforestation, erosion, and other implications of climate change on the population of Kano.
The policy documents presented by Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, Commissioner for Environmental and Climate Change before the state council, the policy aims to protect public health, reduce emissions, and foster sustainable economic growth.
The council presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the commissioner, disclosed the framework targeted key sectors, including Agriculture, Energy, Health, Transport, Education, and Urban Development.
Hashim emphasized that with effective implementation of the documents, Kano will avail of the opportunity around local solutions, global partnerships, and access to climate funds.
“This policy responds to daily climate challenges and aligns with global best practices. The policy focuses on reducing emissions through renewable energy, protecting vulnerable communities, promoting public participation, and ensuring gender-inclusive climate actions,” the Commissioner noted.
Responding, Governor Abba Yusuf, described the document as a well-thought-out policy central to his administration’s agenda for economic resilience and inclusive growth.
Yusuf added that the policy is designed to secure a sustainable future for all residents and reposition Kano to attract international support and funding.
