Kano welcomes appeal court verdicts on LG election

Kano State Government has applauded the landmark judgment of the Court of Appeal that validated the conduct of the local government election in Kano.

In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Abdullahi Waiya viewed the verdict of the Court of Appeal as a victory for democracy, the rule of law, and the collective will of the good people of the State.

In a judgement delivered by the panel on Friday, led by Justice Oyewumi, it overturned the earlier judgement of Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court, Kano, for lacking the jurisdiction to entertain a matter concerning the conduct of local government councils elections.

The matter, instituted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and two others, challenged the constitution of the membership of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), and insisted the processes that produced the 44 council chairmen and 484 councillors were in nullity.

Conversely, the appellate court upheld the appeal filed by the Kano State Government and nullified the decision of the lower court, affirming that the local government councils elections conducted in the state were valid and remain legally binding.

According to the statement, the judgment has further vindicated the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the State Independent Electoral Commission towards conducting credible, free and fair elections.

“In this regard, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commends the judiciary for its courage, fairness, and commitment to upholding constitutional order. He also appreciates the good people of Kano State for their calmness, resilience, and patience while awaiting the outcome of the legal process.

“This collective show of maturity reflects the political awareness and democratic spirit of our great state. The government remains steadfast in its commitment to grassroots development and will continue to support the democratically elected local government councils to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people,” Waiya wrote.
