The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, has ordered the arrest and trial of some police personnel that allegedly extorted N200,000 from a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
Ojo revealed this information, yesterday, during a telephone conversation in Ilorin. He expressed embarrassment at the conduct of the affected officers.
The student, Taiwo Kayode Taye, was travelling in a commercial vehicle to Osogbo when he was stopped by members of the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command at Erin-Ile. They allegedly searched him and demanded that he unlocked his mobile phone.
When he refused, the officers forcefully brought him to the nearby Ijagbo police division, The Guardian learnt. A social media user reported that at Ijagbo police division, the student still refused to unlock his phone, which angered the officers, who then transferred the case to the state police command in Ilorin.
At the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), the student was allegedly coerced into unlocking his phone and transferring N200,000 to an account under the name Lucy Akor.
In the conversation, Ojo confirmed the incident and expressed disappointment over the actions of the accused officers, which made him to order their arrest.The arrest at Erinle caused outrage, especially among students at the institution who learnt of the incident, who immediately took to social media demanding justice.
