Lagos govt rescues mentally challenged woman accused of harassing Agege residents

The Lagos State Government has rescued a mentally challenged woman who was accused of disturbing residents in a community in the Agege area.

Mobolaji Ogunlende, the state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, confirmed this development in a post on his verified X account.
He stated that officials from the ministry’s Rescue Team responded by evacuating the woman for medical attention and rehabilitation.

This action followed a viral video that attracted public attention to the issue.
The video showed a distressed woman pleading with the government to intervene and save her neighbourhood from continuous harassment allegedly caused by the mentally unstable resident.

In the video, the speaker claimed that the woman, identified as living at No. 31 Adedosu Street in Agege, had been throwing stones into people’s homes and brandishing a machete and a knife.
The resident, who remains unidentified in the viral clip that circulated widely on social media, also described the threat posed by the mentally ill individual to the community.

The residents also alleged that despite reporting the situation several times to the Area G Police Station, no concrete action has been taken. They claim officers often turn a deaf ear to their complaints, leaving them feeling unprotected and frustrated.

Responding to the public outcry on Friday, Ogunlende noted that the woman has been taken to a care center for support.

“We remain committed to ensuring social stability in Lagos. Let’s work together to make a difference,” Ogunlende said.

In a related development, a mentally unstable man allegedly attacked four people, killing one and leaving three others critically injured in the Buzzah community in Zing Local Government Area of Taraba State last week.

The assailant, identified by residents as Denis, is well-known in Zing town for wandering the streets dressed in traditional native attire and pretending to preach.
An eyewitness account revealed that one person lost his life in the assault, while three others were seriously injured.

Among the injured were two members of the community vigilante group, who had previously tried to restrict the suspect’s movements due to concerns about his behaviour.
