The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation targeting ‘one-way’ driving, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading and unauthorised garages across parts of the state.

The vehicles were impounded at traffic flashpoints, including Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu, where the agency said persistent traffic violations had continued to disrupt traffic flow and endanger other road users.

LASTMA said one of its major concerns was the practice by some commercial bus operators of reversing against traffic along the stretch from Iddo towards Idumota through Carter Bridge.

According to the agency, the practice poses a significant danger to motorists, commuters and pedestrians approaching the bridge, as they may have little warning that a vehicle is unlawfully moving against the prescribed direction of traffic.

The enforcement operation was, however, met with resistance in some locations, with LASTMA officials reportedly assaulted and injured while carrying out their duties.

The agency also said some individuals who allegedly attacked its personnel and damaged operational vehicles were apprehended.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the enforcement was necessary to address persistent violations and restore order along critical traffic corridors.

Bakare-Oki said the agency had repeatedly warned transport operators, commercial bus drivers and other road users against converting under-bridge spaces, road setbacks and other unauthorised locations into garages.

He said such activities obstruct traffic management and create safety risks for motorists, commuters and pedestrians.

The general manager added that the ongoing enforcement was aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, discouraging dangerous driving practices and protecting lives and property across the state’s road network.

He warned that individuals and groups would not be allowed to use public roads, bridges and under-bridge spaces for illegal loading, parking, vehicle repairs or garage operations.
