A 25-year-old man has died after falling into a soakaway in the Kinnira area opposite Zion Christian Academy School in Ogbomoso North Local Council of Oyo State.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed that its operatives recovered the lifeless body of the victim on Friday night following a distress call from residents.

The identity of the deceased had yet to be disclosed as of press time.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the agency, Moroof Akinwande, the incident occurred at about 7:41 p.m. when a resident, John Onigbinde, alerted the fire service that a man had fallen into a soakaway in the area.

Akinwande stated that fire service personnel, led by Chief Fire Superintendent Dairo, were immediately deployed to the scene for a rescue operation.

He explained that upon arrival, the rescue team “swung into action by applying all necessary rescue knots and operational procedures,” but the victim was eventually recovered unconscious and later confirmed dead.

The body was subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Owode Division, Ogbomoso.

Preliminary findings by the agency indicated that the deceased had attempted to inspect storage tanks located near the soakaway to determine the water level.

“In the process of crossing the area, he accidentally lost his balance and fell into the soakaway,” Akinwande said.

He expressed regret over the incident and urged residents to be more safety-conscious around uncovered soakaways, wells, and other hazardous openings.

According to him, such structures pose serious risks to human life when left unsecured and should be properly covered to prevent avoidable tragedies.

Authorities said further investigation into the incident would continue.
