A middle-aged man, identified simply as Kehinde, has been killed while several others sustained injuries following a violent clash among youths in Asalu community, Lalupon, in Lagelu Local Council of Oyo State.
The incident, which occurred in the community on the outskirts of Ibadan, reportedly involved a group of youths who engaged in a confrontation that escalated into violence, resulting in the fatal attack on the victim.
Kehinde was attacked with dangerous weapons during the clash, sustaining severe injuries that later led to his death.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said a suspect, identified as Giwa Sodiq, has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder.
According to the police, the victim was killed during a violent altercation involving a group of youths in the community.
Ayanlade explained that community leaders reported the incident to the Iyana-Offa Divisional Police Headquarters after being alerted by local security guards about a confrontation involving some youths while residents were asleep.
He added that those injured during the clash were immediately rushed to OjoOluwa Hospital in Iyana-Offa for medical attention, where one of the victims, identified as Kehinde, also known as “OgoOjigbo,” later died from his injuries.
Ayanlade stated that upon receiving the report, a team of operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Iyana-Offa Division swiftly moved to the scene and the hospital to commence investigations.
“Photographs were taken for documentation purposes, and one suspect, GiwaSodiq, was arrested in connection with the incident,” he said.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue of Adeoyo State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, for preservation and autopsy.
The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects who fled the scene in order to ensure they are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Femi Haruna, has commended the swift response of police operatives and urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report criminal activities.
He appealed to members of the public with credible information that could aid the arrest of the fleeing suspects to come forward and assist the police.
Haruna further urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies to ensure safety and security across communities in the state.
