Man in court for allegedly stealing employer’s N5m boat

The police on Wednesday arraigned a 24-year-old boat operator, Segun Zamezu, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing his employer’s fibre boat worth N5 million.

Zamezu, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some others still at large on Feb. 25, at Isalu Waterside area of Badagry.

Ekpo said the defendant stole the boat belonging to the complainant, Mr. Ibrahim Gbadamosi.

He explained that the complainant hired out the boat to the defendant for commercial transportation.

He said that the complainant reported the case to the police leading to the arrest of the defendant.

Ekpo said that the offences contravened Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years jail term for stealing, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. N.A Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned the case until April 16 for mention.
