The Niger Delta Rights Advocates (NDRA), a prominent political pressure group in the region, has applauded Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer, Ugochukwu Orji, for rejecting a ₦10 million bribe from a fleeing ritual suspect—an act the group described as a rare display of integrity and patriotism.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Bright Ngolo, NDRA described Officer Orji’s action as “heartwarming and a sign of hope for a better Nigeria.”
The group commended his courage, honesty, and unwavering commitment to duty, calling for his immediate promotion to serve as an inspiration to other personnel across the nation’s security agencies.
“We demand an automatic promotion for Officer Orji as recognition of his selfless conduct. This will serve as a strong message to officers within the five paramilitary agencies under the Ministry of Interior—and beyond—that national interest must always come before personal gain,” the statement read.
Citing the ongoing welfare reforms by the Ministry of Interior, NDRA noted that over 100,000 officers have benefitted from promotions in the past two years under the current ministerial leadership and urged the Ministry to set a new benchmark by honouring Officer Orji’s exemplary service.
The group also lauded the Ministry’s efforts in bolstering national security, particularly through the deployment of modern surveillance infrastructure at land borders and international airports aimed at curbing cross-border crimes and enhancing national security.
NDRA extended its appreciation to the Nigerian media for spotlighting acts of patriotism and urged media houses to prominently feature Officer Orji’s courageous act to inspire others.
“We salute the honesty and bravery of this gallant officer. His refusal of a ₦10 million bribe speaks volumes about the kind of public servants Nigeria needs,” the group stated.
“Officer Orji’s action is a beacon of integrity. We urge the authorities to recognize and reward his patriotism accordingly.”
