An investigative panel, set up by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, says that there is no evidence that popular crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, received preferential treatment during his six-month prison sentence, as alleged.
The panel’s phase one report was presented on Monday by Uju Agomoh, the Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action.
Agomoh revealed that no evidence supported the claim that Bobrisky slept outside the prison walls after he was sentenced.
“The panel did not find any evidence thus far that suggested that Mr. Okuneye slept outside the custodial centre during the period of his imprisonment, which was from 12th April 2024 to 5th August 2024, which is a six-month correctional sentence with the usual remission applicable,” Agomoh stated.
Recall that Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison on April 12, 2024, for abusing the naira and was released in August.
However, the prison preferential treatment controversy arose after Martins Otse, a social critic known as VeryDarkMan, shared an audio recording allegedly featuring Bobrisky claiming she paid ₦15 million to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials to drop money laundering charges against her.
In the audio, Bobrisky also claimed that a “godfather,” alongside the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, ensured she served the six-month sentence in a private apartment and not in prison.
Following these claims, the minister then ordered a probe into the alleged corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
