Ogun State Chieftain, Chief Lawrence Ogunsanya, the Akogun of Ilawo, has publicly condemned the Olu of Ilawo, Alex Macgregor, for allegedly destabilising local harmony and undermining the rule of law.
Ogunsanya expressed concern that a minor customary issue has escalated into a bitter feud involving prominent figures and accusations of criminal behaviour.
He described Macgregor’s actions as “sacrilegious and unlawful” and accused him of spreading falsehoods on social media.
He said, “I have been made aware of the videos circulating on social media, in which Alex Macgregor and a group of suspended traditional chiefs from Ilawo have shown a blatant disregard for the customs of our people.”
Ogunsanya claimed Macgregor violated a court order (Suit No: MA/31M/2023) and continued to stir up trouble within the community. “Macgregor has shown a blatant disregard for the rule of law. He continues to cause chaos and disrupt the peace despite being legally bound to keep the peace.”
Ogunsanya also accused Macgregor of turning a blind eye to most of his high ranking chiefs who are his loyalists and has allegedly been listed amongst culprits involved in illegal sale of lands belonging to some families of Ilawo origin under the guise and convoluted name of “ILAWO CHIEFTAINCY FAMILY”
“What the chiefs and all the culprits implicated have done are illegal and must be prosecuted,” he said.
Ogunsanya emphasized that families, not chiefs or Obas, own land in Ilawo, citing Yoruba customary law. “Customary law is clear: it is the families who own the land, not the Oba or the chieftaincy.”
He called for Macgregor’s suspension, stating, “Macgregor is educated, but education without character is meaningless. His actions have shown a complete lack of respect for our customs and traditions.”
Ogunsanya urged the public to disregard inaccurate accounts and let the law take its course. “Let us return to our peaceful ways. We must restore the dignity of our customs and traditions.”
