The Oyo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a fatal attack on a group welcoming the governorship candidate of the Accord, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, back to Ibadan, which resulted in the death of a 40-year-old man.
The police said the group was attacked by suspected hoodlums shortly after leaving Molete while proceeding towards Iwo Road, where the Agidigbo office is located.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the incident was reported at a police station on October 14, 2026, by Kehinde Samuel Ibikunle.
According to the statement, one Azeez Tajudeen, a native of Oke Amu in Otesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, sustained a severe injury to his right eye during the attack.
He was immediately rushed for medical attention and subsequently taken to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where he was examined and confirmed dead.
His remains, the police said, had been deposited at the hospital morgue.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, directed that the case be transferred to the Command Monitoring Unit for a thorough and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The command said the investigation was aimed at establishing the circumstances of the incident and ensuring that those responsible were brought to justice.
The police urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the command at least 48 hours before any planned procession or public gathering.
The command said prior notification would enable adequate security arrangements to prevent breaches of public peace and protect participants and other members of the public.
It also appealed to anyone with credible information that could assist the investigation to come forward and cooperate with the police.
