Otu commissions 2.8km road in Calabar South

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, on Thursday, commissioned a 2.8-kilometre road network in Calabar South, ending over 21 years of neglect in the affected communities.

The road, which links Etinyin-Abasi, Otomo Street, Uwanse, and Atamunu, was plagued by severe erosion and deep gullies, rendering it nearly impassable and cutting off residents from essential services and economic activity.

Addressing the residents at the commissioning ceremony, Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructural renewal under the “People First” agenda.

“When we say we will do something, that is exactly what we will do. For 21 years, this road was left abandoned, but today it is fully motorable. This is the spirit of the People First agenda, we are here to fix what others left behind,” Otu stated.

While expressing gratitude, the Clan Head of Efut Uwanse, Muri Francis Effa Bassey, praised the Governor’s intervention, describing the development as a turning point for the community.

“This road was so bad that even pedestrians struggled to pass. But today, we have a solid, well-drained road that will open up economic opportunities and ease trade in this part of Calabar South. We are truly grateful,” he stated.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Pius Ankpo, echoed the Governor’s sentiments and lauded his consistent oversight and commitment to infrastructure development.

The contractor, Mr. Michael Asuquo of Faith Plant Nigeria Limited, expressed appreciation to the state government for the opportunity to execute the project and pledged to maintain the high standards expected by the administration.

With the road now open, residents anticipate significant improvements in mobility, public health, and local commerce.
