Passer-by killed, three injured in clash between police, soldier in Ebonyi
A passer-by was killed and three others injured yesterday in Ebonyi State during a clash between police officers and a military personnel at the Ugwuachara axis of the state.
The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred during a stop-and-search operation by officers of the Ebonyi Police Command’s crack squad, who had stopped a motorcyclist alleged to be a soldier.
A scuffle ensued when officers allegedly tried to confiscate the motorcycle.
During the altercation, a labourer in the vicinity was struck by a stray bullet and died on the spot. Three others were injured and taken to the hospital.
Confirming the incident, Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, said the officer who allegedly fired the shot and the soldier involved in the scuffle have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
“Police officers on stop-and-search stopped the purported soldier for a search. He refused, and a scuffle broke out during which he tried to disarm one of the officers. A bullet was accidentally discharged and hit a bystander,” Uche-Anya explained.
She further stated: “One person died on the spot, while three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. Both the soldier and the police officer are in custody, and a thorough investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The police assured the public of transparency in handling the matter, adding that those responsible will be held accountable as investigations unfold.
