Police arrest 12 suspects in violent attack on late Arise News anchor’s residence

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 12 suspects in connection with a violent robbery at Unique Apartment, Gishiri Village, Katampe District, which left an Arise News staff member, Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu, and a security guard, Barnabas Danlami, dead.

Police spokespersons said the suspects were arrested on the orders of the FCT Commissioner of Police following the September 29, 2025, attack. The operation was led by ACP Victor Godfrey of the Scorpion Squad, using digital and reconstructive intelligence supplied by Giga Forensics, a subsidiary of EIB STRATOC.

Those arrested include Shamsudeen Hassan, from Malumfashi Local Council of Katsina State; Hassan Isah, 22, from Zaria, Kaduna State; Abubakar Alkamu (alias Abba), 27, from Musawa Local Council, Katsina; and Sani Sirajo (alias Dan Borume), 20, from Malumfashi, Katsina. Others are Mashkur Jamilu (alias Abba), 28, from Igabi, Kaduna; Suleiman Badamasi (alias Dan-sule), 21, from Malumfashi, Katsina; Abdul Salam Saleh (alias Na-durudu), from Katsina Local Council; Zaharadeen Muhammad (alias Gwaska), 23, from Chikun, Kaduna; and Musa Adamu (alias Musa Hassan), 30, from Malumfashi, Katsina.

Also in custody are Sumayya Mohammed (alias Baby), 27, from Sammaka, Kaduna; Isah Abdulrahman (alias Abbati), 25, from Zaria, Kaduna; and Musa Umar (alias Small), 31, from Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to police sources, four suspects were initially tracked and arrested shortly after the robbery through phone surveillance. Eight more were intercepted on October 8 while allegedly planning another robbery in Maitama.

During interrogation, Hassan confessed to shooting the security guard, while Sirajo admitted trying to prevent Maduagwu from falling off the three-storey building. The gang reportedly stole a white Honda CR-V and shared N200,000 each from the proceeds.

Recovered items include a fabricated AK-47 rifle, 36 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a locally made pistol, a pump-action gun, two live cartridges, four stolen phones, two knives, a cutlass, and nine torchlights used in the attack.

Police said investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate, adding that exhibits, including a recovered AK-47 found near Zuma Rock, have been documented. Photos of the suspects remain withheld pending further arrests.
