The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 13 suspects in separate operations across the state, recovering firearms, 75 rounds of live ammunition, dangerous weapons, motorcycles and other exhibits.

The operations, which were carried out between August 3 and 5, 2026, included the arrest of a suspected armed robber, 12 suspected cultists accused of assaulting and extorting hotel patrons, and the recovery of a submachine gun and 75 rounds of ammunition from a rented apartment.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

In the first incident, operatives of the Itele Division arrested a suspected armed robber, identified as Babatunde Olasunkanmi, following a distress call from a motorcyclist who reported that his motorcycle had been stolen at gunpoint.

The incident occurred at about 12:48 a.m. on August 3, 2026, along the Orgi Block area of Otele.

According to Babaseyi, the victim told the police that he had picked up two passengers at Three Crown Bus Stop before they allegedly robbed him of his motorcycle.

He said the operatives immediately mobilised to the scene and arrested Olasunkanmi, who was allegedly with a pistol.

His accomplice escaped with the victim’s red Bajaj motorcycle.

Items recovered from the suspect included a locally fabricated, cut-to-size double-barrel pistol allegedly used in the robbery, charms, a Tecno Android phone and a UBA ATM card.

The police said efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice, while the suspect and recovered exhibits would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

In a separate operation on the same day, operatives of the Idi-Oke Division arrested 12 suspected cultists over alleged assault and extortion at Harodous Hotel, Lattykay, Igbesa.

The suspects, who were arrested at about 5:00p.m. following credible intelligence, were allegedly attacking and extorting hotel patrons with dangerous weapons, including knives and battle axes, as well as assorted charms.

Babaseyi said the operatives cordoned off the area and arrested 12 suspects, while several others fled the scene.

Recovered exhibits included assorted charms, battle axes, knives, cult paraphernalia, eight motorcycles, a black Lexus vehicle and an unregistered red Toyota Camry.

He said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while those arrested would be transferred to the SCID, Eleweran, for further investigation.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Sakura Division have recovered an English submachine gun and 75 rounds of live ammunition concealed inside a wardrobe in a rented apartment.

The recovery followed information received by the police at about 1 p.m. on August 5, 2026, concerning firearms allegedly concealed in the apartment previously occupied by a deceased landlord.

According to Babaseyi, operatives immediately secured the location and, during a search of the apartment, recovered the SMG rifle and 75 rounds of live ammunition from the wardrobe.

He said the recovered firearm and ammunition had been secured and would be subjected to ballistic examination by the SCID, Eleweran, while investigation continues to establish how and why they were concealed in the apartment.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols, rapid response and sustained inter-agency collaboration to prevent crime and disrupt criminal activities across the state.

Ojajuni urged residents to remain calm and vigilant and to continue providing the police with timely and credible information through established channels.

He assured residents that the command would continue to safeguard lives and property and ensure a safe and secure environment across Ogun State.
