Police arrest Adamawa varsity student for sextortion, impersonation, others

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old student of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, over alleged involvement in sextortion, impersonation, and cyberstalking.

The suspect, identified as Paul John, a 500-level student and resident of Jiddel in Michika Local Government Area, was apprehended for allegedly creating multiple fake social media accounts using photos of unsuspecting women without their consent.

According to the police, the fake accounts, operating under names such as Rose YarLele, Procious Favourite, Wange Precious, and Joy Dennis, featured the victims’ images alongside offensive captions such as “sexy lesbian” and “I am lesbian.”

Investigations revealed that John used the fake profiles to solicit nude photographs from some victims under false pretenses. He allegedly went on to blackmail them, demanding money and sexual favors, and in some cases, advertised the victims for hookup services on social media, damaging their reputations.

Police said the suspect’s actions caused significant emotional, financial, and psychological distress to several women.

“Acting on credible intelligence, operatives attached to the Commissioner of Police’s Monitoring Unit tracked and arrested the suspect. He is currently in custody as investigations continue,” the police stated.

Commissioner of Police Dankombo Morris has ordered a thorough investigation into the case and directed that the suspect be charged to court once the probe is concluded.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje warned that the Command would not tolerate online crimes such as sextortion, cyberstalking, and impersonation. He advised perpetrators to desist or face the full weight of the law.

The police urged social media users, particularly women, to be cautious when sharing personal content online and to report suspicious activities or blackmail attempts for action.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity and security of all residents, both offline and online.
