The police in Enugu State have arrested a 27-year-old dispatch rider for allegedly distributing illicit drugs in the state. Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad arrested the suspect in the early hours of January 18, 2026, during a routine surveillance patrol.

In a statement yesterday, the state police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, identified the suspect as Desmond Obodo Chilota. He said Chilota was apprehended within the Uwani area of Enugu while conveying a large quantity of highly restricted tramadol tablets.

According to Ndukwe, the suspect was disguised as a dispatch rider and was transporting the illicit drugs on a red Kymco motorcycle, which was recovered at the time of his arrest.

The spokesperson also disclosed that during the same patrol, at about 7:12 a.m. on the same day, operatives recovered an abandoned bag containing substances suspected to be crystal methamphetamine, locally known as “Mkpuru-mmiri”, along with an Android mobile phone at Onu-Asata, Ogui area of Enugu.

He said the suspected drug peddlers abandoned the bag and fled on sighting the police operatives, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.

Ndukwe said the arrested suspect and the recovered exhibits, including the motorcycle, were undergoing further investigation. Reacting to the operations, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing drug-related and other criminal activities across the state. He urged residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant and supportive of the police in the fight against crime.
