The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 12 persons in connection with circulating handbills and posters on social media attributed to Oje Parapo of Oregun.
The publication warned the public and restricted movement. Oregun Traditional Egungun festival is scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025. The Lagos State Police Command said it assessed the level of fear and apprehension already generated among residents because of the publication of restrictions, and declared that the event must not hold.
It said the stoppage was done to ensure public safety, law and order, and the protection of life and property in the state.The command added that a festival that could threaten the peace or heighten tension in the state would not be permitted under any circumstance.
The Lagos State Police Command warned that it would not tolerate lawlessness in any part of the state, as the Commissioner of Police (CP), Olohundare Jimoh, directed the suspension of the festival.
The CP said that no group should take laws into their hands and prevent other Nigerians from movement around and throughout the state at will at any time. The command promised to continue protecting the fundamental human rights of everyone in Lagos.
It further warned anyone planning unauthorised gatherings or activities capable of threatening public peace and safety to desist forthwith from such plans.
“I wish to reaffirm that the OjeParapo of Oregun should desist forthwith from holding the Egungun Festival as the security for the festival can no longer be guaranteed. Further, the stress and fear already instilled in residents are unacceptable. The full weight of the law will be applied to anyone or group that attempts to undermine the peace, safety or stability of Lagos.”
In similar circumstances at Mafoluku, Oshodi, within the Makinde Police Division, the command on November 23, 2025, after similar publications were circulated, arrested 12 suspects.
The CP said the suspects would be prosecuted on completion of investigation. The command advised Lagosians to go about their lawful duties and other responsibilities without any fear or apprehension.
