Police officer arrested, detained over murder of Enugu musician
The Police in Enugu, over the weekend, arrested and detained one of its officers in connection with the murder of popular traditional Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah.
Igbo-Jah met his untimely death at the hands of a Police Inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Command Squad, Enugu, at about 8:10 pm on Friday, within the premises of the command.
The musician was reportedly leaving the squad’s headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be determined, the officer fired his rifle, fatally injuring him.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the attending doctor. His body has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Close associates and fans of the artist stated that he had attended an event at the anti-cult office when policemen began shooting indiscriminately, and the artist was hit during the incident.
An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said, “They went for an event at the anti-cult office in Enugu. Unfortunately for him, when those ndi Eke started shooting, some bullets hit him, and before they could rush him to the hospital, he died on the way.”
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the arrest and detention of the inspector, though he withheld the officer’s name. He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, had ordered a full-scale investigation to facilitate appropriate disciplinary actions against the officer.
“The Commissioner empathises with and consoles the victim’s family, friends, and associates, describing the unfortunate incident as unacceptable. He assures that the officer and anyone else found culpable will be sanctioned according to the law to serve as a deterrent,” Ndukwe said.
“CP Kanayo urges everyone connected to the victim to remain calm and cooperate with the police to ensure that justice is served,” he added.
