Police probe viral video linked to Ifite-Awka killings, vow to apprehend suspects
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed intercepting a viral video linked to the killing of five persons in Ifite-Awka.
Following this development, the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and revealed that three others who were seriously injured are receiving medical treatment.
Also, the command addressed accusations from the relatives of the victims involved in the Nibo killings.
The details were released over the weekend in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Tochukwu Ikenga.
The statement read: “The Anambra State Police Command, on 25/10/2024, intercepted a protest video regarding the unfortunate incident that occurred at Ifite-Awka on 24/10/2024, which resulted in the death of five persons and left three others seriously injured. We wish to state that this incident is not targeted at any ethnic or religious group.”
He further explained: “Preliminary information reveals that the armed men began shooting sporadically in an attempt to flee when the police were alerted to their activities in the area.
“The command remains focused on ongoing patrols, enhancing security, and conducting surveillance to prevent such incidents in the future.”
Ikenga reaffirmed the command’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice, extending condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
He added, “We will not rest until those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.”
