Police smash four-man car snatching gang in Edo, recover stolen SUV

Edo State Police Command operatives have arrested a four-man gang specialising in car snatching for allegedly stealing a Toyota Highlander at gunpoint in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Council in Edo.

The suspects, Ifeanyi Okpara, 26, Dennis Okosun, 25, and Edwin Iruogbe, 27, allegedly snatched the SUV with Registration No. RBC 66 AQ while operating on a motorcycle in Ekpoma, Edo State.

The fourth suspect, Shehu Ismail, 25, was reported to have purchased the vehicle from the carjackers for N1.5 million.

Confirming the development, the State Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo, stated that the vehicle’s owner, Iwologbe Raphael, of Judges Quarters, Ekpoma, reported the car theft to the police on August 23, 2024, at about 8:30 p.m.

He said, “On the strength of this complaint, operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, through painstaking tech-driven investigation, led to the recovery of the snatched vehicle and the arrest of all the suspects involved.

“Other items recovered from the suspects included a locally-made pistol with two live cartridges. All the suspects have confessed to the crime and will soon be charged in court.”
