Property owners in Kogi to enjoy tax discount for prompt payment

The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) has announced a 15 percent discount for property owners who promptly pay their Land Use Charge (LUC) after receiving demand notices.

Executive Chairman of KGIRS, Alhaji Sule Salihu Enehe, disclosed this in Lokoja while addressing journalists on the significance of the Land Use Charge and the benefits of early payment.

Enehe explained that the Land Use Charge was introduced to streamline the state’s tax system, eliminate multiple taxation, and enhance efficiency in revenue administration.

According to him, property owners who pay their charges within five days of receiving the demand notice will enjoy a 15 percent discount, while payments made within 15 days attract a 10 percent rebate. Those who pay within 25 days will receive a 5 percent discount.

“Payment can be made at all bank branches across the state as well as through Kogi State Revenue POS Agents,” he said.

Enehe assured that the revenue generated would be channeled toward infrastructure development, environmental maintenance, and improved security across the state.

Highlighting the benefits of the Land Use Charge, he said it ensures accurate property assessment for taxation, supports land allocation for public projects, creates employment for local enumerators, and provides a reliable property database to guide government planning.

He further noted that certain categories of property are exempted from the charge, including those owned and occupied by religious bodies, public cemeteries, non-profit educational institutions, public libraries, palaces of recognized traditional rulers, community halls, and properties owned and occupied by pensioners.

Enehe urged property owners to take advantage of the incentives, emphasizing that prompt payment of the Land Use Charge contributes to the state’s development and efficient public service delivery.
