Property worth millions lost as fire razes Ibadan market
Again, tragedy struck in Ibadan on Monday as property worth millions of naira was razed as a result of a fire incident at ‘Oja Agbe’ – farmers market – in the Oyo state capital
The fire incident started in the early hours of Monday at the market located at Moniya garage in the Akinyele local government area of the state.
It was gathered that the fire incident was caused by electrical appliances unattended.
The intervention of the men of the Oyo State Fire Service saved the situation and prevented further escalation of the fire.
The General Manager of Oyo State Fire Agency, Mr Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident.
He said no life was lost in the incident.
Akinyinka said, “The fire incident was reported to the agency at exactly 00:27hrs that there were shops on fire at Moniya Garage, Oja Agbe, Ibadan.
“Immediately, the personnel of this agency were deployed to the scene of the incident. On getting to the address above, it was discovered to be rows of shops and container shops met well alight.
“We quickly Swift into action and we were able to curtail the fire from where we met it and restricted it from spreading to all nearby shops and other properties.
“Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed and billions of properties were saved by the Agency personnel, no lives were lost.
“However, I want to advise our people in Oyo State that they should handle fire with care to avoid fire incidents.
”The remote cause of the fire incident was traced to plugging of electrical appliances unattended to”.
