The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Rivers State Command, has commenced an internal investigation into the fatal shooting of a resident by one of its operatives in Port Harcourt, while urging members of the public to remain calm as inquiries continue.
In a press statement, the Corps expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and regrettable.
According to the statement signed by the State Public Relations Officer, SC Ihemnacho Umeado, the incident occurred on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Ukukalama-Ama, Fimie, in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.
The Command said the circumstances surrounding the shooting have raised serious concerns, particularly against the backdrop of what it described as an upsurge in cult-related activities and other criminal acts in the area.
The NSCDC stressed that it recognises the emotional impact of the incident on the affected community and pledged to handle the matter with transparency and accountability.
To ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the death, the State Commandant, Dr. Dennis Lesor Reuben, has directed the Command’s Intelligence and Investigation Department to immediately commence an internal investigation.
The Command also disclosed that it is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure that the investigation is fair, impartial and comprehensive.
While appealing for restraint, Dr. Reuben urged residents to avoid violent protests or actions that could further heighten tensions, assuring that the Command remains committed to justice and due process.
“The investigation will address all aspects of the incident, and the public will be kept informed of developments,” the statement said.
The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining public safety and ensuring that justice is served.
The Command again extended its sympathies to the bereaved family, assuring that every necessary step would be taken to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
