RRS arrests driver for absconding with employer’s laptop in Lagos
Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos have arrested a driver, identified as 30-year-old Kelechi Jeffrey, for allegedly abandoning his employer’s vehicle and fleeing with her laptop in Ikeja.
The suspect, employed on August 21, 2024, was apprehended in the Ikorodu area on Sunday, October 27, 2024, following an RRS-led manhunt.
Reports indicate that on October 22, Kelechi drove his employer to her office, then abandoned the car with the keys near Alausa Central Business District, Ikeja, and absconded with her HP EliteBook laptop. The laptop contained both official and sensitive personal information belonging to his employer.
After fleeing with the device, Kelechi sold the laptop at Computer Village, Ikeja, for N120,000. He later attempted to extort his employer by demanding an additional N100,000, claiming he would return the computer upon receiving the payment.
However, once the funds were transferred, he cut off all contact, switching off his phone and becoming unreachable.
On Monday, October 28, 2024, police traced and recovered the laptop, albeit formatted, from the buyer in Computer Village.
According to RRS Commander, CSP Shola Jejeloye, Kelechi will be charged to court for prosecution.
