Security expert cautions against misleading criticism over insecurity

Civil society and opposition forum highlights security concerns, coalition divisions and political outlook ahead of 2027 elections.

A renowned security expert and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has cautioned Nigerians against spreading misleading criticism and unverified information over the country’s worsening insecurity challenges.

Mumuni gave the warning amid growing public outrage over rising kidnappings, economic hardship and recent attacks on schools in parts of Oyo State, which have intensified criticism of government and security agencies.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, over the weekend, the APC chieftain acknowledged that citizens have the constitutional right to express dissatisfaction over insecurity, corruption and governance failures.

He, however, stressed that criticism must remain constructive, fact-based and solution-oriented rather than degenerating into misinformation, panic and harmful narratives capable of worsening national tensions.

According to him, while public frustration over insecurity and the rising cost of living is understandable, Nigerians must avoid blanket condemnation and emotional reactions that could undermine efforts aimed at restoring stability.

Mumuni noted that criticism plays an important role in every democratic society because it promotes accountability and encourages leaders to improve governance and service delivery.

“Criticism is vital in a democracy because it holds leaders accountable and drives positive change. But there is a clear difference between constructive criticism and harmful negativity,” he said.

The security expert expressed concern over the increasing spread of unverified claims and sensational narratives on social media, warning that false information relating to security matters could create fear, confusion and distrust among citizens.

He urged Nigerians to verify facts before sharing security-related reports or allegations, particularly during periods of heightened public anxiety.

Mumuni also stated that the current administration inherited deep-rooted challenges, including insecurity, economic instability, infrastructural deficits and governance problems accumulated over the years.

He argued that addressing such longstanding issues requires patience, sustained reforms and collective support from citizens, communities and relevant stakeholders.

The APC chieftain further advised Nigerians to channel criticisms toward practical solutions and meaningful engagement rather than attacks capable of discouraging genuine efforts to tackle insecurity.

He maintained that opposition to government policies should be guided by reason and credible alternatives rather than emotions or political sentiments.

Mumuni called for stronger collaboration between government and citizens, insisting that national security requires collective responsibility and public cooperation.

“Let us criticise wisely, act responsibly and build Nigeria together,” he added.
