Law students of Atiba University, Oyo, on Monday shut the university’s campus gate in protest over grievances against the institution’s management.

The students locked the gate and vowed not to vacate the premises or suspend the protest until their concerns were addressed by the university’s top authorities.

The protest attracted the intervention of men of the Nigeria Police Force, who arrived at the scene and appealed to the students to remain calm and give the university management until (Wednesday) today to address their grievances.

The police said the management had indicated that its representatives would meet with the students on Wednesday to discuss their concerns.

The protesters, however, rejected the appeal, insisting that they wanted the Vice-Chancellor, the Founder and the Registrar to personally address them and provide satisfactory responses to their demands.

They maintained that sending representatives to negotiate with them would not be enough, stressing that they wanted direct engagement with the university’s principal officers.

The students consequently vowed to keep the campus gate shut and continue the protest until their grievances were satisfactorily addressed.

The development disrupted activities at the university as the protesting students remained at the campus gate, awaiting a response from the institution’s top management.

As of the time of filing this report, the specific grievances and demands of the students had not been made public.

Reacting to the development, the university’s spokesperson, Oluwatoyin Kolawole, said she was not on campus when the protest began but promised to find out the students’ grievances.

The students, meanwhile, said they were prepared to sustain the protest until the issues were resolved to their satisfaction.
