
An unconfirmed number of persons were feared killed on Wednesday, with many others sustaining various degrees of injuries following a massive explosion that occurred around the Karu Bridge on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, cutting off the ever-busy road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after a gas tanker burst into flames and engulfed several vehicles.
The incident happened during rush hour as commuters were returning from work and other daily activities.
Several explosions followed the initial burst of fire, causing serious panic.
It was gathered that emergency responders were on hand to offer rescue services.

Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies were also reportedly at the scene, working to contain the situation.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the incident caused severe gridlock along the axis, forcing many commuters to abandon their vehicles.
At press time, at 8:30 p.m., vehicles were said to be clogged in both directions of the expressway, unable to move.
