Thousands attend burial of former Delta chief nursing officer Mabel Egede

Thousands of mourners gathered in Boju Boju Owa community, Delta State, on April 10, 2026, for the burial of Dame Mabel Bamidele Egede (née Aleh), a former Chief Nursing Officer in the state and matriarch of the family of the late Christopher Ikechukwu Egede.

Popularly known as Ezinne Ezioku, meaning Mother of Truth, Egede died on October 19, 2025. She was born on July 5, 1943, to Pa Abel Mokwuye Aleh and Mama Grace Aleh (née Ogboi).

She was recognised as a community leader with notable contributions to the health sector and active service in the church.

Attendance grew as the ceremony progressed, drawing people from different backgrounds who came to pay their respects to the deceased, whose life was marked by service and community impact.

The event featured a celebratory atmosphere, with various groups providing entertainment, including performances by pallbearers.

Among dignitaries present were former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa; Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Chiedu Ebie; Chief Hilary Agholor, a Royal Chief of Agbor Kingdom; Chief Godwin Ogadi (Ugochukwutumeonye); Dr Hilary Obioma Ibegbulem; and Mr and Mrs Momah, who travelled from the United States.

In his sermon, the Bishop of Ika Diocese, Rt Rev’d Godfrey I. Ekpenisi, paid tribute to Egede and emphasised the importance of living a worthy life.

Her youngest child, Mr Roland Egede, also known as Rolly, described her as a precious jewel and an epitome of a virtuous woman.

Her eldest son, Mr Chris Egede, expressed gratitude for her love and sacrifices, praising her kindness and selfless devotion.

Family members said her legacy would endure through her influence on their lives and actions.
