Two wood merchants, identified as Ahohe Seido and Dogbon, are missing following a boat accident in the Gbòde Jedo River in Odofin, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident occurred early Thursday morning when a severe storm capsized the boat carrying the merchants.

The accident happened around 7:00 am, prompting local divers to search for the missing individuals. According to reports, the merchants were transporting firewood from their village to Benin Republic when the storm hit, causing the boat to overturn.

Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that while the other passengers were rescued, Seido and Dogbon have not been found.

“A report of a tragic incident was filed at the Ipokia Division on September 12, 2024, around 7:00 a.m. Two individuals, Awhanse Jimoh (male) and Ahohe Jimoh (male), both wood merchants from Ilepa Village in Ipokia, reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer,” Odutola said.

The survivors recounted that the boat was transporting firewood along the Gbòde Jedo River in Ijofin, Ipokia, Ogun State, en route to Benin Republic to sell the goods. A sudden strong current caused the boat to capsize, throwing everyone onboard into the water. Despite the rescue efforts, only two people were saved.

“Tragically, Ahohe Seido and Dogbon did not survive the incident, and despite extensive search efforts by divers, their bodies have yet to be recovered,” Odutola added.

The police spokesperson said that community divers are actively participating in the ongoing search and rescue operations. An investigation has been launched to verify the details of the accident and the statements of the survivors.

“The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, is aware of the incident and hopes for the safe recovery of the missing persons. He has also advised that with the return of the rains, it is crucial to wear life jackets to mitigate the risks associated with such hazards,” Odutola noted.

The local community remains on high alert as efforts continue to find the missing merchants.
