The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, has condemned the recent reported killing of dozens of civilians in Dara-jamal Village in Bama Local Government Area (LGA), of Borno State.
Fall, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the killing of more than 50 civilians on September 5.
He noted that Initial reports indicate that suspected members of a non-state armed group (NSAG) attacked the village, resulting in numerous casualties and abductions.
He said, “I am deeply appalled and saddened by Friday’s reported killing of dozens of civilians. Civilians should never be a target!”
According to him, the attack not only claimed lives but also led to injuries among fleeing residents, and at least 28 houses were reportedly burned. The UN anticipates that the casualty numbers may increase as further information becomes available.
The resident coordinator conveyed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and urged the Federal Government and local authorities to take action.
“I call on security authorities to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous attack and swiftly bring them to justice. I also call for the immediate release of all those abducted,” he said.
He lamented that the incident highlights a disturbing trend of escalating violence in Borno State, where multiple deadly attacks against civilians have been recorded this year, resulting in significant loss of life.
“The recent killing of civilians is yet another grim reminder of the toll of rising violent attacks and insecurity in Borno State.
“I reiterate my call to parties to the conflict to protect civilians as well as their property and to adhere to international humanitarian and human rights law,” Fall adds.
He mentioned a range of attacks targeting civilians, including farmers and traders, further worsening the crisis in the Northeast as neighbouring states, such as Adamawa and Yobe, have also reported attacks on civilian areas, including health centres and markets.
The UN representative reaffirmed the body’s commitment to support those affected by the ongoing conflict in the region.
