THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Sunday announced that it has for the second time extended the date for the collection of the Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) in its offices at the local councils and wards to enable more people pick their cards ahead of the 2015 general elections. .
The commission, which has continued to receive knocks from stakeholders over non-availability of the PVCs at the wards and local councils that are designated for collection, said that it has received over 15 million more PVCs from their contractors, adding that they have also been moved to the various states for collection. .
A statement issued Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu, said that the exercise, which was scheduled to come to an end on January 31, has been extended for another one week, adding that the PVC collection will continue till Sunday, February 8, 2015.
Idowu said that the decision was intended to give registered voters who are yet to collect their PVCs the opportunity to do so in readiness for next month’s general elections.
“INEC hereby calls on duly registered persons not to delay in going to collect their cards before the expiration of the new deadline.”
The commission re-affirms its determination to make the 2015 elections free, fair, credible and peaceful; and urges all stakeholders, including voters, to spare no effort in working towards the same objective.” Idowu further said in the statement.
