Minister, govs’ wives honour victims of gender violence

Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen and wives of state governors, yesterday, held a candle light procession for victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Abuja.

Tallen said the occasion was to remember those who lost their lives to one form of sexual abuse or the other nationwide.

She said the procession was part of the 16 days of activism to end sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls.

“The candlelight procession is to remember those who have died as a result of GBV. We want to heighten the awareness so that everyone will be concerned and end it.

We will not stop after 16 days until we feel that the awareness is right and perpetrators are fully punished,” she stated

The minister commended the governors for declaring a state of emergency on violence against women and girls, urging all states to domesticate the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP).

Chairperson, Governors’ Wives Forum, Bisi Fayemi, said they (spouses of state chief executives) had earlier met to proffer solutions to the problem.
