Nigerian Army marks 162 years with 2025 Army Day celebration

The Nigerian Army is set to commemorate its 162nd anniversary with a week-long series of events for the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, announced at a press briefing held at Army Headquarters in Abuja.

This year’s celebration will take place under the theme, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive.” Lt. Gen. Oluyede highlighted the Army’s rich history dating back to 1863 with the establishment of the “Glover Hausas,” emphasizing its pivotal role in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty through civil wars and the ongoing fight against terrorism.

The programme will include civil-military cooperation projects, a golf tournament, medical outreach initiatives, school engagement programmes, and will culminate in a grand finale parade scheduled for July 6 in Kaduna.

Additional activities include interfaith religious services, literary competitions, a public lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy, and a gala night dedicated to military personnel.

The COAS reiterated the Army’s dedication to transforming the force by focusing on soldier welfare and strengthening national security. He also acknowledged the media’s crucial role in shaping public opinion and supporting military efforts.

Since its inception in 1978, NADCEL has also served as a solemn occasion to honour fallen heroes and commemorate the first shot fired in the Nigerian Civil War at Garkem, Cross River State.
