The Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB) has urged all levels of government to provide its members with training and skill acquisition opportunities, enabling them to participate in society fully.

The Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB) has urged all levels of government to provide its members with training and skill acquisition opportunities, enabling them to participate in society fully.

This appeal was made during a walk commemorating International White Cane and Safety Day 2024, organised by the Lagos chapter of NAB and joined by members from Akure, Bauchi, Abuja, and other states .

The walk commenced at Ojo Barracks in Lagos and concluded at the Lagos State University campus. Tunde Mohammed, immediate past chairman and planning committee chairman, emphasised the event’s significance, highlighting the importance of enabling those with visual impairments to move independently and confidently.

“We are calling on the government to give us a sense of belonging by providing our people with education, skills acquisition, and necessary infrastructure,” Mohammed stated. “We are not beggars.”

The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) actively participated in the event, with Public Relations and Media Manager Mr Benjamin Mordi and other staff members guiding NAB members.

Mordi affirmed BSN’s longstanding support for the association, including providing Braille Bibles. He urged government and corporate organisations to increase their support for the NAB and its initiatives.

Adeola Aina, Vice Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of NAB, highlighted this year’s theme, “The White Cane, my symbol of independence and confidence.” He called on the government to improve road conditions to benefit all Nigerians, particularly those with disabilities.
