NIN doesn’t confer citizenship on foreigners, agency clarifies

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), yesterday, said the National Identity Number (NIN) does not in any way confer citizenship on foreigners.

The Director General, Aziz Aliyu, who made the clarification at this year’s National Identity Day with the theme: “Identity for health, sustainable development and growth”, advised Nigerians not to be enthralled by the hard copy of the national identity card, but should rather focus on the NIN, which he emphasized, was more important.

The DG pledged that the enrolment of people in the project would get to every community in the next three years. The event, also known as ID-Day, is to stress the key role identity plays in empowering individuals and enhancing their access to rights, services and the formal economy.

According to Aliyu, 42 million Nigerians have got their unique digital identity numbers to fast-track social and economic transactions globally.
