NIS unveils border management strategy

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has unveiled a National Border Management Strategy for the year 2019 to 2023 to enhance national security along the nation's borders.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has unveiled a National Border Management Strategy for the year 2019 to 2023 to enhance national security along the nation’s borders.

Comptroller-General, immigration service, Muhammad Babandede said that apart from securing the borders, the strategy would also contribute to economic development, reinforce social harmony and ensure protection of migrants’ human rights including vulnerable migrants.

In a communiqué issued by the NIS public relations officer, Sunday James, Babandede said that the project leading to the formulation of the strategy document was funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Organisation for Migration. He said the document addresses the issue of national security, border security and border as a means of trade.

Chairman house committee on Interior, Nasir Daura who was also present at the meeting, said that the committee would ensure the NIS is given the necessary support to bring about a smooth implementation of the policy.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Hajia Zainab Ahmed also said that the effective implementation of the strategy depended on dynamic institutional framework and robust political backing.
