Lagos denies non-compliance
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), yesterday, ended its two-day nationwide warning strike, encouraging its members to maintain their steadfast resolve if the government fails to provide appropriate responses to its demand.
President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, said the same passion and determination that fuelled the warning strike would be crucial if the Congress finds itself compelled to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.
Ajaero, while appreciating members for their invaluable contributions and steadfast dedication to the cause of the struggle, said the body was not unmindful of the actions of detractors and Fifth Columnists, saying that in the face of them all, it remained undaunted and more committed to the defence of Nigerian workers and people at any given time.
Meanwhile, the Lagos Council Chairperson of the NLC, Funmi Sessi, has denied that Lagos did not comply during the strike, stating that the state’s secretariat has more of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) workers than the NLC, most of whom are junior workers.
“Lagos complied. I don’t know where reporters got their stories. This is just an NLC strike and the senior workers at Alausa belong to TUC and they are reporting to the national body that we did not comply.
“How many junior workers are in Alausa? I have the videos. I cannot be fighting with TUC; I don’t have issues with them. All the directors, permanent secretaries and politicians are not in NLC.”
The government too does not want us to shame them, they might not mind going and renting politicians or instructing members to stay in the secretariat and pretend they are doing work. The strike is not measured by just the public sector, hospitals, universities and other sectors complied. Why is everybody concentrating at the secretariat? Those that went to work are not our members,” she said.
