Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN), Prof Charles Arinze Igwe, has said there is no bias in the choice of honorary doctorate degree awardees in her 51st convocation ceremony.
The University had listed the Managing Director, Fidelity Bank, Mrs. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe; former Inspector General of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo; Gen. JOJ Okoloagu (rtd) and Mr. Igochukwu Weli as recipients; a development that elicited concerns over federal character.
But responding to the concerns during a press briefing to announce the convocation, Igwe stated that it was based on availability.
He said most of the people consulted and recommended outside the SouthEast region preferred to be “honoured next year”, stressing that the institution would continue to reflect federal character in all its dealings.
On recent alleged admission racketeering levelled against the university on the floor of the Senate, he said the school had always been meticulous in admitting students in line with her mandate.
He said: “UNN is not just another University. Anybody who wants to be a student of UNN must work hard. UNN is known for discipline. We maintain standards,” he said, insisting there was no racketeering anywhere in UNN.
On the convocation coming up on Friday at the Nsukka campus, Igwe disclosed that 11,444 will be awarded with degree certificates.
According to him, a breakdown of the results include 288 First Class honours; 4,853 Second Class Upper; 5,077 Second Class Lower; 653, Third Class; 7 pass and 616 unclassified.
