NSIB recovers VDR, ECDIS from MV Maersk Valparaiso over Bonny collision

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB)

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has recovered and downloaded critical navigational data from the container vessel, MV Maersk Valparaiso.

This is a part of its ongoing investigation into the collision involving the vessel and oil tanker, MT Lady Martina, at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State on May 20, 2026.

A statement yesterday by the Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, NSIB, Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, classified the incident as a “very serious marine casualty.”

The statement disclosed that investigators had retrieved data from the vessel’s Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) for detailed forensic and navigational analysis.

According to the statement, NSIB activated its marine occurrence response protocols and deployed an investigation Go-Team to Onne and Bonny on May 22, 2026, following its notification of the collision.

NSIB said the investigative team boarded both vessels and commenced evidence preservation procedures, including interviews with the Masters and key crew members, while also securing operational records and navigational information relevant to the incident.

The statement further hinted that that in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Casualty Investigation Code and Nigeria’s international obligations, it had formally notified the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) of Singapore as a substantially interested state.

NSIB added that collaborative engagement had also commenced with relevant local and international stakeholders connected to the investigation.

The statement reassured maritime stakeholders and the international shipping community that investigation would be conducted with professionalism, independence and thoroughness aimed solely at identifying the causal and contributory factors behind the collision and improving maritime safety standards.

The statement said: “The sole objective is to establish the causal and contributory factors of the occurrence and to promote enhanced maritime safety.

“The investigation remains ongoing. It would be premature to speculate on the probable causes at this stage. The bureau therefore strongly urges the public and all stakeholders to refrain from speculation while the investigative process continues.”

It maintained that final investigation report would be published upon completion of the investigation in accordance with applicable national regulations and international obligations.
