The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday held its House of Representatives primary elections across the state’s 236 wards, with incumbent lawmakers and prominent party figures emerging victorious in what party officials and observers described as a peaceful, transparent and well-coordinated exercise.
The primaries, monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at ward and collation centres, produced candidates who will represent the party in the forthcoming general elections.
Most of the nine aspirants earlier adopted through consensus arrangements were overwhelmingly affirmed by delegates during the exercise.
Among the notable winners were incumbent federal lawmaker, Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, representing Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, and Olumide Osoba, son of former Ogun State governor and APC chieftain, Chief Olusegun Osoba.
Isiaka secured the APC ticket to seek a second term in the House of Representatives, while Olumide Osoba emerged unopposed to clinch the party’s ticket for a fourth consecutive term representing Obafemi Owode/Abeokuta North/Odeda Federal Constituency in Ogun Central Senatorial District.
The contest in Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, however, proved to be one of the fiercest battles of the primaries, as incumbent lawmaker, Hon. Afolabi Afuape, faced four challengers — Sodirudeen Ayodeji, Abdul-Akeem Ademolake, Hon. Lanre Edun and Tolulope Fijayo Ayinla Philips.
After voting across the constituency’s 15 wards, Afuape emerged victorious with 12,633 valid votes, defeating his closest rival, Tolulope Philips, who polled 760 votes.
A similarly competitive atmosphere played out in parts of Ogun East Senatorial District, where some aspirants rejected the earlier consensus arrangement and opted for the “Option A4” voting method to determine the party’s candidates.
Also emerging from the exercise was former Ogun State House of Assembly member and immediate past Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, who secured the APC ticket for Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency.
Widely regarded as a grassroots politician with strong mobilisation capacity, Adeleye is seeking to represent the constituency in the House of Representatives for the first time.
If elected in the January 15, 2027 National Assembly elections, she will become a member of the 11th National Assembly.
Party officials, delegates and observers commended the orderly conduct of the exercise, describing it as a reflection of the APC’s internal democratic process and growing political stability within the party in Ogun State.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ogun APC leadership had yet to officially address journalists on the outcome of the primaries despite earlier indications that a press briefing would be held after the exercise.
